"About the Drawings"

Pencil, paper, embossed.

These drawings reveal
the structure and energy of my paintings
that are never seen
once the work is
pigmented, sewn, and completed.

Each drawing is from a previously
completed painting from which
I had traced the linear pattern of wax lines
created by the tjanting tool in the
rendering of a painting.

After several steps to resize the tracing,
the image is translated into the drawing
you see exhibited here,
with the embossing material added last.

These drawings were accomplished
not through compulsion
but rather as a methodical,
contemplative process,
done in sections of woven penciled lines
until the image is fulfilled.
