"Bananas!"
H 38.5" x W 36"
Framed
As
a child growing up
in Venezuela,
I despised the
banana plant: its big
floppy leaves
breaking off; the flies buzzing around
the fallen fruit.
During a recent visit
home to Caracas,
I noticed the fine
proportions of the
banana leaves and
recognized the
exotic qualities of
the banana flower,
which are both
amazing and repulsive.
My father had told
me how he and his
cousin as children,
once on a prank
had slashed the
trunks of banana
plants to see them
spurt like fountains.
Realizing the
incredible energy this
plant holds along with
its male and female
characteristics,
I portrayed its
physical exuberance
expressing
a lust for life.
